The seats and tables, now engraved "HSIS" with our new branding iron, look great. This was done during our last workday by Paul Sampson, engineer and seat and table builder. It nearly killed him, lugging the gas cylinders around the reserve, but he did it.

We also planted 8 magnificent Kowhai trees, donated to the Society by staff of the Novotel Hotel in Rotorua, who also tidied up the Carpark at a workday on Thurs. 19th. So there is now the Douglas Kowhai Grove near the Douglas table on the Ynys Fraser Walkway. Photos can be seen on the Workdays page of the website. Sincere thanks to the staff of the Novotel.

Workday July 23 : the weather was forecast to be dodgy, but apart from the odd shower, fair conditions allowed a small but dedicated group to get on with track maintenance and weed clearance. More wood chips were spread on the muddy patches on the main track so these patches are getting better and better for foot traffic. Clarice's 4 wheeler was briefly highjacked at one point, but in a burst of speed that would make Usiah Bolt shake in his shoes, she brought things back under control in a flash !! A large tree that had blown over just above the first footbridge was dealt to, with nearby natives protected from damage. The removal of a few overhanging branches and a smaller dead tree, has opened up a beautiful tunnel view upstream from this first footbridge. Mel was able to make brief friends with a local koura, freshwater crayfish, which seemed to enjoy the 'love' from a local blonde !
Afterwards, some magnificent soup with fresh bread, prepared by Cherry, was enjoyed by all back at Kaska Rd. Along with some well deserved refreshments.
Next workday scheduled for SAT. AUG. 27TH.

Hi Jackie,
Thank you for your interest in the Hamurana Springs Recreation Reserve.
We understand and empathise with your view that the weed in the stream detracts from the view of the stream bed and the crystal clear water flowing into the lake.
Historically, the weed comes and goes in cycles apparently.
The HSIS Committtee looked into the cost of getting the weed removed, it is a very specialised and expensive practice, which includes ensuring that the cleared weed is trapped and removed before flowing into the Lake.
The cost was totally beyond the means of the Society, huge. So we rely on historical patterns repeating themselves, that the weed will go [and then come back]...........
Thank you for your interest.

Had a lovely walk on Sunday got lost looking for other spring head ( sign said 500 meters) just found marker posts. Do you have plans to remove the weed as it detracted from the beauty of the springs? We could see the work that had been put in to the area, great job.

There was a good turn up for the workday which focussed on the main track from the carpark bridge to the golf course. Visitors to the Reserve often stopped to comment favourably. It was good to devote some time to one of the weed species, the Robinias, which are sprouting in an area of the Redwoods not far from the main Spring. We will keep an eye on these in the months ahead. The lunch afterwards was up to the usual high standard.

Had an awesome work day today, doing something I've wanted to do for a long, long time. You need to get down there and spot the changes and perhaps you could think about joining us in the future and help to make a change yourself. We're a great team & we have a great time, the only thing missing is you!
