Travellers Trees

Local Bed and Breakfasts, Homestays and Hamurana Springs Incorporated Society (HSIS) are working together to implement a local sustainable tourism project.  This is to ensure that the region’s best loved natural spots are preserved for visitors for years to come.

By purchasing a native tree you will not only help Hamurana Springs but you will enhance the New Zealand clean, green landscape and provide sustained environmental benefits.

Planting a Travellers' Tree

Sustainable tourism aims to reduce environmental and social impacts. Tourism has the potential to negatively impact the environment, the tourism sector generates about 6% of greenhouse gas emissions in NZ.
Domestic travel accounts for about 75% of tourism’s direct energy use and emissions. In terms of international visitation, 90% of visitors’ carbon emissions are generated in travelling to and from New Zealand.
With a worldwide increase in greenhouse gas emissions planting trees can help offset some of these emissions by creating a carbon sink as trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere throughout their lives.

Hamurana Springs is located 15-20 minutes drive north-east from Rotorua central, on the left-hand side of Hamurana. It is famous for the beautiful crystal clear water that bubbles up and flows down the stream to Lake Rotorua. The main Spring flows at the rate of approximately 1mL/hour.The springs and stream are home to a host of water birds including, scaup, little black cormorants, ducks and black swans. The Hamurana Springs Incorporated Society objective is to restore the Hamurana Springs to its former state and then to extend and enhance the accessibility to the reserve to enrich the visitor experience.

Travellers’ Trees will help this project, they cost $20 or $25, will be planted by HSIS and maintained on your behalf.
